Unfortunately there are many 'things' in our air that shouldn't be, our body doesn't need them and really should not have to inhale them. They are in fact detrimental to our health. Perhaps knowing a little more about where these chemicals & particles come from might help us make some small changes in the way we do things on a daily basis.
Carbon Monoxide
- Carbon Monoxide has a negative effect on health in very small amounts as it is taken up by the body more readily than oxygen, therefore effecting essential body processes and causing tissue damage in the long term. Carbon monoxide comes from petrol, oil, gas & coal.
Particles
- Particles are tiny solid matter or liquid droplets floating in the air, ready to be inhaled and because of their size can become embedded deeply into the lungs, irritating existing respiratory & cardiovascular conditions and causing the elderly and children to be more susceptible to breathing difficulties and respiratory illness. They come from vehicles, industry, domestic fuel burning & industrial & domestic incineration. They also come from natural sources like bushfires, wind blown dust and the ocean.
Nitrogen Dioxide
- Nitrogen Dioxide is emitted into the air from the combustion of fossil fuels (petrol, coal & gas). It has detrimental effects on the throat & lungs (emphysema & cell damage)
Sulphur Dioxide
- Sulphur Dioxide comes from industry, coal & oil used in power stations, wood used for domestic heating & manufacture of industrial chemicals. It’s negative effects are increased in the presence of airborne particles, Sulphur dioxide is a respiratory irritant which attacks the throat and lungs, with long term exposure leading to respiratory illness such as chronic bronchitis.
Ozone
- Ozone is the main constituent in photochemical smog (oxidant), which is produced in the air by reactions between nitrogen oxides & hydrocarbons. High levels of oxidant are formed after hours of strong sunlight. Motor vehicles, industry & power stations are some of the sources of the emissions from which oxidants are formed. The health effects of these oxidants are restriction of the air passages which causes breathing difficulties and an increase in respiratory infections.
