Exercise, Weight loss & Breastfeeding

  • Exercising after breastfeeding will help protect your back and shoulders in women with larger breasts and will generally be more comfortable than exercising before a feed
  • There is some evidence to suggest that intense exercise will cause an increase in lactic acid in breast milk and therefore change the pH and taste of your milk. You do not have to be concerned when performing mild to moderate levels of exercise
  • Exercise & weight loss of approximately ½ kilogram per week does not change the composition of breast milk and is safe for you and your infant
  • Exercise is an important part of a new mother's post-natal recovery and is beneficial for emotional wellbeing
