Flying the flag of freedom
Being creative throughout our lifetime is of vital importance for being a grounded, well rounded individual. Studies have shown that when we engage with something that we love on a regular basis our stress levels are reduced, we attain a healthier self esteem, our ability to problem solve and grasp concepts increases and our sense of purpose and connection in the world deepens.
Because creativity in both action and thinking is at the forefront of what defines us as humans, we are indebted to our innate need to express ourselves. As humans we are very visual beings, able to identify stories, ideas and messages through mere pictures. Similar to how we dream, you find that, visually your dreams make sense, but when you start to explain your dreams in words, it starts to become confusing and sometimes the meaning becomes lost.
Our creative pursuits function to express that which we cannot express in words.
Growing up, something happens to this ability to want to create and express ourselves. Our creative freedom can become stifled and lost to more ‘practical’ activities. The point of creativity as a soul enriching experience can become overshadowed with ...” but what’s it for?” If not continually nurtured, creativity suddenly becomes something that gifted people do. It becomes stripped from general education and put away only for special classes.
If we are fortunate enough to have creativity welcomed in the home it is an invaluable life tool.
Being creative is fun and one of the good things in life. Having children it’s inevitable that the question of what’s important to us and our family arises. We all have hopes and dreams for ourselves and our children to achieve and experience. The ability to express ourselves freely and without judgement is a core desire that we all have, wether we are conscious of it or not. It encourages independence, free thinking and a will to achieve in other areas in our lives.
So how do we find the time to unite with our creative side?
Well, we just do! Once we find something that we can become lost in, finding the time for it suddenly becomes easier. Ultimately we are looking for something we are actively present in the moment that results towards a final product. Anything that uses the body to shape something into life is creative expression.
If you haven’t found what you love to create try some of the following; and if you have, more power to you, what are you doing reading this then...? Go fly that flag for the rest of us!
