Understanding and accessing your intuition

You know the score, your child has a cold... it’s been a couple of days but nothing has changed... you know that if you go to the doctor there will be nothing they can do that you aren't already doing... but you're doubting yourself...  the shoulds and the what ifs begin...so, you take him. $50 later, a trip to Medicare, and a cranky 2 year old and you are back where you started...” i knew i didn’t have to take him!”

Sound familiar? It’s a crime we often commit upon ourselves, doubt and distrust in the little voice inside. jellyfish 2_2Robbing ourselves of our true knowing and inner guidance, and as mothers it really is the best tool we have. There are many decisions that we face every day, that don’t necessarily have a direct effect upon ourselves. When you are the voice and reason for your children until they can make decisions for themselves, it can be the brunt of confusion and apprehension. The way our lives go these days we hand over a lot of our power to people in “authority”. Doctors to cure our ailments, experts telling us how to raise our kids, teachers to educate, priests to offer spiritual guidance and big business to secure our future. With so much opinion and ‘right way’ of doing things, how as mothers are we able to confidently choose what is the right path for ourselves? What is right for our children who are unable to decide for themselves, and our family as a whole?

Intuition

Intuition is that gut feeling, that knowing that we receive from deep inside ourselves. A deep inner knowledge that we have access to anytime we need. It’s literally a teaching in-tuition from our source of being, or soul. For each of us the communication or signals are all different, just as we are. Some have a racing heart beat when they sense the right way, others can literally feel it within their bodies like their stomach or their heart, even tingling hands. The most difficult thing about accessing our intuition is that it is not connected to logic. We are taught from an early age to always think things through and go with what makes sense, the ‘right conclusion’. However  in order to strengthen our inner voice, we must adapt our way of thinking. For example you may get a feeling that you need to take the long way home from work. You think this is crazy as dinner is not going to cook itself, and go your normal route. Only to find there is road works and a detour that is taking you longer than what it would had you listened and gone the long way...

Tapping in

So how do we know what are just crazy thoughts and what are intuitive thoughts? Well intuition is like a muscle that needs to be strengthened, so the more you tune your inner self to hearing your intuitive self the stronger and clearer the voice will become.

  • Find something creative that will allow your intuition to take reign and become in a zone like state. Anything from gardening, baking, drawing (even grab the kids colouring in books and colour in) something that you are able to become lost in, preferably with no distractions.  This allows our intuitive self to open. Notice and be aware of the voice that is speaking and the messages your body is sending “oh nutmeg should go in this“or “this plant will not flourish in this pot” listen and be aware
  • Keep a journal of your progress as you use your intuition throughout your daily life. Track your success and your failures. Life is about living and learning so allow yourself the slip ups and just keep working towards knowing and loving yourself
  • Give yourself the time to be with yourself. The most well rounded mothers are those that put themselves first. Shocking i know, but taking care of yourself is truly the best example you set for your children. Plus you will be more equipped to handle difficult situations as they arise and know the best way to handle it. Push the guilt aside and give yourself some centring time.
